Aim of the course

The course aims to support the development of cultural competency in professionals working with the Irish Travellers communities and increase participants' ability to deliver positive and culturally appropriate early interventions focused on safeguarding Irish Traveller children and vulnerable adults. Whilst the course is open to all, it is particular beneficial for Health Professionals, Teachers, Social Workers, Independent Organisations, and Housing Officers.

By the end of the session delegates will:

  • have increased their knowledge of the culture, traditions, and the history of the Gypsy and Traveller communities,
  • have a better understanding of diversity within the Gypsy and Traveller communities, and
  • have identified obstacles to access and attitudinal issues, or barriers in education, health, employment, accommodation, safeguarding, and other public services that inhibit the delivery of quality provision to Gypsy and Traveller communities.

A Note about Groups:

  • Group A training is for people who are in contact with or work regularly with children and young people and with their parents/carers
  • Group B training is for people who work regularly with children and young people and adults who are parents/carers and may have particular responsibility for safeguarding children
  • Group C training is for designated safeguarding leads and managers in organisations employing staff to work with children and families or with responsibility for commissioning or delivering services.

This course is for colleagues that fall into groups A, B and C.
