COURSE AIMS
This Virtual course is designed to support Social Work and Health Care professionals understand the safeguarding risks that have developed as a result of the Covid 19 outbreak. Living in isolation or being socially isolated because of age, disability, physical or mental impairment or illness has identified a number of factors where these groups may be targeted with an increased risk of abuse and/or exploitation. Using the existing legal and best practice frameworks embedded in the MCA 2005, The Care Act 2014, The Mental Health Act 1983 inc.2007 amendment and Pan London Safeguarding P&P’s this course will support learners to have a clearer understanding of how to identify and assess risks and apply safeguarding procedures as a priority.
COURSE CONTENT
- Identifying those at risk and how prolonged isolation can increase risk of abuse and/or exploitation
- How Covid 19 has increased risks as many service users formal and informal networks of support were disrupted initially and in some cases permanently.
- What the actual risks are or may be?
- Supporting service users to recognise these risks and better safeguard themselves
- Understanding the range and scope of potential abuse – bogus callers, phone, email, postal or doorstep scammers, helpful strangers, ‘fake friends’, family members, carers, domestic abuse etc
- Recognising inappropriate or dangerous decision making because of isolation.
- Assessing Capacity to make decisions - key components of the MCA 2005
- To reflect Equality, Diversity and Inclusion issues in the decision making process
- To recognise individual and organisational responsibilities to safeguard with timely and appropriate interventions
- To support service users to develop coping skills via risk assessment and risk management to help build resilience and reduce and redress those areas of risk and concern.
