The objectives of the programme are to provide participants with opportunities to:

Confirm the fundamental principles, expectations and requirements of the Mental Capacity Act 2005.

Understand how to effectively assess capacity using the guidance in the Mental Capacity Act Code of Practice and local policies, procedures and processes (including practice approaches as highlighted by the Court of Protection).

Focus on an operational understanding of decision makers and decision making, drawing out the concept of best interests to understand what is required within operational practice when making best interest decisions.

Explore how the role of the independent Mental Capacity Advocate (IMCA) operates in practice.

Explore the role of the Court of Protection, its function to contribute to decision making and its role in safeguarding people who may lack capacity to make certain decisions for themselves.

Provide a reminder of the DoLS process and practice approaches.
