Detail:

An understanding of private fostering is important for any professional working either directly, or indirectly with children & young people. Private fostering arrangements are care arrangements made for children & young people under 16 (18 if they have a disability). The arrangements to stay with an extended family member, person in their social network or someone not previously known to them for at least 28 days can be made by the young person themself or their carer.

While it's important to remember that not every child in this type of arrangement is vulnerable, we also know that the care arrangement for, and needs of, this cohort are often invisible which may lead to increased vulnerability e.g., as in the case of Victoria Climbie.

Aim of the course:

This workshop aims to explain what private fostering is, and to provide clarity about good practice in working in this context with both children and other agencies.

By the end of the course delegates will:

  • be able to define & identify a private fostering arrangement,
  • be aware of the duties of staff across different agencies in working with children in these arrangements, and
  • be aware of good practice in working in a private fostering context.

A Note about Groups:

  • Group A training is for people who are in contact with or work regularly with children and young people and with their parents/carers
  • Group B training is for people who work regularly with children and young people and adults who are parents/carers and may have particular responsibility for safeguarding children
  • Group C training is for designated safeguarding leads and managers in organisations employing staff to work with children and families or with responsibility for commissioning or delivering services.

This course is for colleagues that fall into groups A, B and C.
